Bio

Rebecca Farmer leads the ACLU-NC's communications team and oversees the public face of the organization.

At the ACLU-NC she creates and implements comprehensive strategic communications plans to amplify the organization's work on a variety of issues, including reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights, education equity, criminal justice reform, free speech and digital privacy.

Rebecca has been a coalition leader in communications campaigns that helped pass laws like AB 1266 to support transgender students and AB 154 to expand early abortion access in California. She worked with UC Davis students who were pepper-sprayed to tell their stories as part of the ACLU-NC's lawsuit that won a $1 million settlement on their behalf. She helped launched Demand Your dotRights, the ACLU's nationwide campaign for digital privacy and online free speech.

She previously served as the organization's Media Relations Director. Prior to the ACLU-NC, Rebecca worked at Breast Cancer Action, where she led the Think Before You Pink campaign, the SPIN Project and was the Press Secretary at the National Organization for Women.

She has presented at conferences including SXSW interactive and Creating Change, and has been a guest lecturer at Stanford Law School. She was a 2012-2013 Rockwood Leadership Institute LGBTQ Fellow. Rebecca earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon.

Occupy and Oakland Police: One Year Later

One year ago today, police fired tear gas, flash bang grenades and lead-filled bags into a massive crowd of Occupy Oakland demonstrators. The ACLU and the National Lawyers Guild sued the Oakland Police Department for its egregious constitutional violations against demonstrators during the October 25, 2011 and November 2, 2011 demonstrations. That lawsuit is ongoing.
