The ACLU of Northern California joins activists and advocates from around the world to honor and celebrate the life of Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers. Much will be said about this audacious woman in the days and weeks to come, but mere words will never do justice to the incredible legacy she leaves behind. Her fierce dedication to civil rights in the face of aggressive and sometimes violent resistance speaks to the fearlessness and unyielding resolve with which she lived her life.

In 1988, ACLU NorCal supported Dolores Huerta in her fight against the San Francisco Police Department after she suffered a near fatal beating at a protest against then Vice-President George H.W. Bush on behalf of farm workers. ACLU NorCal filed a complaint with the Office of Citizens Complaints against the city and the officer who allegedly beat her. Although he was never held responsible, the SFPD was pressured to change its crowd control policies and Huerta received a settlement that supported her through retirement.

In January 1997, ACLU NorCal was proud to honor Huerta with the Chief Justice Earl Warren Civil Liberties Award. The award is given to honor individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders in the battle to defend constitutional rights, promote equality, and advance civil liberties.

Dolores Huerta will forever be remembered for her resilience and ability to speak truth to power. By the time of her death at the age of 96, she had inspired generations with her battle cry, which can be heard today: “Sí, se puede” – “Yes, you can”.

May Dolores Huerta rest in peace and power.
