Bio

Bethany Woolman is a communications strategist with the ACLU of Northern California, where she focuses on telling stories that amplify the impact of the ACLU’s advocacy and litigation.

Bethany first joined the ACLU as a John Gardner Public Service Fellow in 2010. During this time, she publicized the organization’s work on police accountability, education equity, and the rights of youth. She also produced a series of informational videos on reproductive health, LGBT students’ rights, and the unjust criminalization of people with drug addictions.

On staff since 2015, Bethany has exposed the covert use of social media surveillance software by police, supported teens fighting back against school censorship, and educated the public about reproductive health violations in California jails – among other projects.

Bethany is also an artist, filmmaker, and restorative justice practitioner. She is a New Leaders Council alumnus and represents the state of California as a Harry S. Truman Scholar. Bethany graduated with honors from Stanford University, where she earned a B.A. in Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity.
