In May 2026, the federal Board of Prisons published an environmental review of FCI Dublin, the notorious former women’s prison in Alameda County. This is the first step in a process that could result in the property being turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is searching for detention space near its San Francisco field office.
FCI Dublin is tainted by a legacy of horrific sexual abuse. It’s also unsafe and uninhabitable. The property should be demolished, not repurposed to imprison valued members of our community.
The federal government also plans to build an immigration detention facility in Gilroy. Workers are already clearing the 24-acre property in unincorporated Santa Clara County to make way for construction.
Due to years of organizing and advocacy to end ICE contracts with county jails in our region, we’ve stopped ICE from gaining a foothold in our communities. Today there are no immigration detention centers in Northern California, and we want to keep it that way.
Adding detention beds in Northern California will lead to more ICE arrests, human rights abuses, deportations, and deaths. We must prevent ICE from expanding the Trump administration’s inhumane system of mass detention in our state.
