How do you distinguish a rule that promises election security from a rule that protects the people already in power? In this inaugural episode of MAKE the CASE, Abdi Soltani, executive director of the ACLU of Northern California, discusses attacks on free and fair elections in California and nationwide, and how the ACLU is working to defend this critical constitutional right.

Each episode of MAKE the CASE takes you behind the scenes of a consequential case or issue making headlines, unpacking what’s at stake, why the ACLU gets involved, and whose rights could be affected.

Prop 39 Fast Facts

California's elections are secure. Prop 39, the voter ID initiative on the November 2026 ballot, would require voters to show government-issued ID every time they vote — creating privacy risks, barriers for eligible voters, ballot rejections, and targeting communities that already face obstacles to voting. All this to solve a problem that doesn't exist. Vote NO on Prop 39.
